Issue #55: Content Moderation, Story-telling, Convincing others, etc

[Follow up: Fake it till you make it]
Last week, I wrote about an interpretation of this advice that boiled down to starting with things you know need to be a part of your routine earlier in new environments to start a self-fulfilling loop.
Last week, I was thinking about this in a broader sense. I realised when I was giving interviews, I had to coalesce my previous work in a format that made it easier for the person listening to understand what I did. In reality, however, all those projects were much messier.
So the stories we tell about ourselves are kind of a summary we present to the world. So if this works bottom-up i.e. doing the work first and then summarizing into easily digestible summaries, maybe it also works the other way around.
You start with the summary (fake it) till you map out the scrappy implementation details (make it).
[Article: Garbage in, Garbage out]
This is a good read on why curating your information is important. I think as AI-generated slop grows, this is going to be a skill everyone needs to actively cultivate.
The article provides some good pointers:
You are the average of the 5 closest people to you. — This is also true in the online world.
Algorithms feed you the most extreme view, so you need to
”To truly understand a complicated situation, you need to hear as many different opinions as you can. If you hear the same thing again and again, you will ignore certain key facts, no matter what side of the discourse you’re on.”You have to curate what you see—through continued effort. — Just like so many things in life, this is something you need to actively keep working upon, unfortunately, it’s not set and forget.
[Article: On Getting Through To People]
This was an interesting read on how to get through to people using ethos, pathos, and logos.
Out of these, pathos, which is using emotions strategically, is something I have ignored for the longest time. But as the article states, “You don’t need to go overboard with this. Just pick one emotion you want to evoke, identify where it matters most in your message, and bring it to life through specific details.”
I might just make an entire post after reading up on this.
